Police: Arlington man arrested for armed carjacking in Charlestown

An Arlington man was arrested Monday in Somerville after he allegedly carjacked a man in Charlestown, Boston police said in a statement. Around 8:30 p.m., officers responded to the area of 437 Rutherford Ave. for a report of an armed carjacking. Police said a man had turned his car on when the suspect abruptly opened the driver’s side door and said, “Get out! I need your car!”The suspect had a hand hidden under his shirt and was gesturing as if he had a gun, police said. The victim complied, and police said the the suspect nearly caused an accident as he drove away.Moments later, officers saw the vehicle on Cambridge Street and attempted to pull the man over. Police were later able to obstruct the car in the area of 33 Parker St. in Somerville. Jonathan Daniell, 28, was arrested at the scene, according to police. Officers removed several hypodermic needles and $139 in cash from Daniell’s pockets, but did not recover a firearm from him or the car, according to police.Somerville police later arrived on scene and told the responding Boston officers that Daniell matched the description of a suspect who had just committed an armed robbery in the area of 4 Broadway, according to the statement. Police said when they asked Daniell if he’d committed the robbery, he responded, “Yeah.” Daniell was subsequently positively identified in both incidents, police said. He also had a suspended license and an outstanding warrant for drug-related offenses, according to the statement.Daniell is expected to appear in Boston Municipal Court on charges of armed carjacking and operating a motor vehicle after revocation or suspension. Police said he will be charged separately for the Somerville armed robbery.
