Police: Man arrested, loaded firearm recovered in Dorchester

The firearm recovered Sunday.
A Dorchester man was arrested and a loaded firearm recovered after a foot chase Sunday in Dorchester, Boston police said in a statement.
Around 10:45 p.m., officers responded to the area of 134 Whitfield St. for a report of a large party that had overflowed onto the street, where fights had reportedly broken out and someone had displayed a gun, according to police.
Upon arrival, officers saw Rakeem Lewis, 23, standing in the street approximately 15 feet in front of their vehicle. Police said Lewis turned and began fleeing after seeing the officers, pushing people out of his way as he ran.
Officers chased Lewis for several blocks before arresting him near 51 West Tremlett St. Police said they recovered a loaded 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun from Lewis’ shorts pocket and discovered he was wearing a bulletproof vest.
Moments before catching Lewis, officers heard the sound of gunfire nearby but were unable to discern its source. To assure them he had not fired his gun, Lewis told the officers, “I didn’t pop off, I didn’t pop off,” according to the statement.
Officers then discovered Lewis had a license to carry a firearm but was in violation of his restrictions at the time, according to police. His licence and gun were seized by police.
He is expected to appear in Dorchester District Court on charges of carrying a firearm in violation of restrictions and disturbing the peace, according to the statement.
