Police: Teenager wielding gun outside Dorchester court arrested

Police arrested a teenager for carrying a loaded gun outside Dorchester District Court on Monday.

Police were called to the scene just after 2 p.m. A caller told police the suspect had threatened to shoot one of his family members, according to the Boston Police Department.

On their way to the area, police say they were given a description of the suspect — a black teenager, 6-foot-3-inches tall, wearing a black t-shirt and khaki shorts. Officers tracked down the suspect on Washington Street and, when they saw him, “exited their cruiser with department-issued firearms drawn and immediately began issuing clear, concise commands instructing the suspect to show his hands to the officers,” according to police.

Instead of doing what the officers instructed, the teenager, Raughn Williams, 18, of Boston, reportedly looked at the officers and asked, “Why?”

Even though Williams did not comply, police said officers continued to give “clear and loud verbal commands for the suspect to get on the ground with his hands and arms out.”

Next, Williams began pacing back and forth while holding the front of his waistband with his right hand, police said. After another two minutes, he finally got down on his right knee with his right hand still on his waist, police said. Police then handcuffed him.

Police say an unarmed officer at the scene said, “That kid’s lucky he didn’t get shot.”

Williams was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm on a public way, and assault by means of a dangerous weapon (a gun).
