Arlington man with knife allegedly broke into home, assaulted woman

An Arlington man accused of breaking into a home and assaulting a woman was arrested Wednesday morning, according to police.

Joseph Dealmeida, 26, faces charges of breaking and entering in the daytime for felony, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and armed assault in a dwelling, police said.

Just before noon, police responded to a report that a man with a knife was assaulting a woman in her garage. Upon arriving at the Ridge Street residence, officers found Dealmeida, who was being restrained by a witness who had heard calls for help, and the woman, who was not injured, according to police. Dealmeida was apprehended and arrested.

“This was a dangerous situation in which a suspect with a weapon was attempting to harm an individual,” Arlington Police Chief Frederick Ryan said in a statement. “Thanks to the quick response by this officer who was conducting traffic detail nearby, this suspect was apprehended safely and no one was injured.”

Dealmeida will be arraigned in Cambridge District Court.
