A Tyngsborough man was charged Monday for allegedly dragging an officer with the door of his car following a multi-town chase that ended with officers shooting him in Chelmsford, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney’s office.

Michael Clark, 27, was charged with assault with intent to murder; assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (motor vehicle); operating negligently to endanger; assault and battery on a police officer; resisting arrest; receiving a stolen motor vehicle; receiving stolen property over $250, and failure to stop for a police officer.

According to the DA’s office, Clark fled from a Tyngsborough officer who had attempted to make a traffic stop Saturday night. Officers said Clark then led police on a chase down Route 3 into Chelmsford, where he exited the highway and pulled into a parking lot outside Sully’s, a local ice cream stand.

As a Chelmsford police sergeant approached his vehicle, Clark began to back out of the parking lot and the sergeant got caught on his door and was dragged several yards, according to the DA’s office. Fearing for the safety of the sergeant, a Tyngsborough officer fired his service weapon, striking Clark twice, authorities said.

Clark was taken by medical helicopter to Boston Medical Center for treatment. The sergeant, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, was transported to a local-area hospital and later released. Officials said the officer who fired his weapon is currently on administrative leave per department policy.

Clark is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the hospital if his medical condition allows, the DA’s office said.
