Worcester officer stabbed in the face while responding to restraining order violation

A Worcester police officer is recovering from a stab wound to the face after apprehending a man accused of a violating a restraining order and threatening his ex-girlfriend early Sunday morning, according to police.

The 30-year-old Worcester suspect, whose name has not been released, faces charges of violation of a restraining order, trespassing, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, attempted murder, mayhem, and threatening to commit a crime, police said.

Police responded to a report of a restraining order violation at a Grand Street apartment building at 4 a.m. Upon arriving, officers spoke with a 23-year-old woman who said her ex-boyfriend, against whom she had a restraining order, had called her and verbally threatened her and her family, police said.

The man then arrived in the apartment lobby where police were speaking to the woman, according to police. An officer attempted to arrest the man for violation of a restraining order, but he resisted and tried to run from the scene, police said.

A second officer arrived at the scene and helped to tackle the suspect, who allegedly continued to fight against the officers while wielding a steak knife. During the ongoing struggle, the man stabbed one of the officers in the face, leading police to eventually use a taser to subdue him and take him into custody, according to police.

The injured officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment, which included receiving stitches to close the stab wound, police said. He was released and is recovering.

The suspect was also taken to a local hospital for evaluation, according to police.
