Authorities: Drunk driver struck bicyclist, fled from scene

An Ayer man was arraigned Wednesday for allegedly striking a bicyclist while driving drunk and then fleeing the scene, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney’s office.

Aaron Delollis, 35, was charged in Ayer District Court with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily injury, leaving the scene of a personal injury, leaving the scene of property damage, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, using a motor vehicle without authority, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, speeding, and a marked lanes violation.

Groton police responded to calls around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday that a bicyclist had been struck by a car on Hill Road and that the vehicle had fled the scene, the DA’s office said. Responding officers found a 54-year-old Devens man with serious injuries, and a Groton Fire Department ambulance transported him to a local hospital for treatment, authorities said.

A description of the fleeing vehicle was given to police, allowing officers to locate it shortly after the crash at the intersection of Hill Road and West Main Street. The vehicle was abandoned and had severe front end damage, according to the DA’s office.

Authorities said a K-9 unit was requested to search for the suspect, who was later found in a wooded area on West Main Street. Police said he was intoxicated and arrested Delollis without incident.

“The defendant in this case was allegedly intoxicated when he struck a bicyclist on the road causing the victim to sustain a head injury before fleeing the scene,” District Attorney Marian Ryan said in a statement. “This type of reckless behavior compromised not only the safety of the victim, but any individuals who were in the vicinity of the defendant Tuesday night.”
