Man arrested after allegedly running at officers with loaded gun
A man was arrested in South Boston Tuesday after officers heard a gunshot and saw him brandish a firearm, according to Boston police.
Officers were patrolling in the area of Logan and Gavin Ways around 5:30 p.m. when they heard what seemed to be a gunshot, according to police. Officers said they saw Jeffry Ventura, 18, of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, with a gun in his hand, pointing the firearm across the street. Ventura allegedly began running toward the officers while trying to hide the firearm in his waistband.
Officers drew their firearms and ordered the man to drop his gun and put his hands up. Ventura eventually placed the firearm on the hood of a vehicle and complied with the officers’ orders, according to police.
After the arrest, police said they recovered a loaded silver Bersa SA .22 caliber firearm. Ventura was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a residence.
Police Commissioner William Evans touted the restraint shown by his officers in what he said was a potentially life-threatening situation.
“The officers and detectives at this incident were faced with an intense scene,” he said, “but thanks to their training and quick thinking, the incident was quickly and professionally handled.”
