A Dorchester rape suspect on the run for 23 years was captured in North Carolina and will be sent back to Massachusetts, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office.

John J. Hartin, now 46, was indicted in 1993 on five counts of rape of a child. Authorities say his victims were two boys, ages 8 and 9, who he befriended, then assaulted.

Four years after he fled prosecution, a federal arrest warrant was issued charging Hartin with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. A reward of up to $25,000 was offered by the FBI.
