10-year-old girl and teen injured in Springfield shooting

A 10-year-old girl and a 19-year-old woman were both injured in a shooting in Springfield Thursday, according to Springfield police.

Around 4:40 p.m., police responded to calls of “shots fired” at the corner of Euclid and Belmont Avenues. Responding officers found a 19-year-old woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the buttocks area. The woman was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was in good condition, police said.

During the officers’ initial investigation, police received a call from a mother who said her 10-year-old daughter had been struck in the leg by a stray bullet on Euclid Avenue.

The mother was described as frantic and pulled over her car at the request of the 911 dispatcher so she could be met by officers and an ambulance. Police said the girl was treated by emergency personnel and transported to a local emergency room in good condition.

Witnesses told police a black man, described as in his late 20s or early 30s with a Mohawk-type haircut and neon green-colored traffic vest,  got out of a dark blue, two-door Honda Civic and argued with unknown subjects on the corner of the shooting. He then pulled out a handgun and started firing, police said.

“This type of activity will not be tolerated on the streets of Springfield,” Springfield Police Commissioner John Barbieri said in a statement. “Our officers work tirelessly everyday to take guns and violent offenders off the street. The neighborhood surrounding Euclid Avenue will be safe and extra patrols will be in the area.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Major Crimes Unit at 413-787-6355.
