South Boston man found with crystal meth in Chelsea parking lot

Hazmat crews spent four hours checking out a car in a Chelsea hotel parking lot Wednesday morning after a suspect suggested he had hazardous materials inside, investigators said.

Police were called around 1:30 a.m. on a report of a man passed out inside the car at the Wyndham hotel, Chelsea police Captain Keith Houghton said. Thiago Araujo, 31, of South Boston, was inside having some kind of medical emergency, possibly because of drugs he’d taken, Houghton said.

At the hospital, Araujo told hospital staff police should be careful because of what he had in the car, sparking the hazmat response, Houghton said.

Police eventually found crystal methamphetamine, sedatives and what appeared to be vials of steroids inside the car, but no other hazardous materials, according to police.

Araujo was charged with possession of class B, C and E drugs, as well as operating under the influence of drugs. He is expected to be arraigned Wednesday morning.
