Jorge Zambrano, the man accused of killing Auburn police Officer Ronald Tarentino Jr., called his daughter minutes after the shooting to say he was sorry, reports The Boston Globe.

Zambrano, 35, called his 12-year-old daughter to say “he was sorry and wished that he had been there for her,” according to court records made public on Wednesday.

Tarentino was allegedly shot and killed early Sunday morning by Zambrano at a traffic stop. Officers found Tarentino bleeding from at least two gunshot wounds in his cruiser and rushed him to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Later that day, Zambrano, who has a long criminal history, was killed in a shootout with police in Oxford.
