Man punched by troopers in car chase video ordered held without bail

Richard Simone, the man who led police on a high-speed car chase and then was punched by troopers as he was arrested, was arraigned in Worcester District Court on Wednesday.

He was ordered held without bail for violation of probation. He also had a bail of $50,000 set on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, failure to stop for police, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle, the Worcester District Attorney’s office said.

Those charges are related to a May 8 incident in Millbury in which Simone allegedly tried to hit a police cruiser with his truck, MassLive reports.

Simone, 50, led police on a chase from Holden, Massachustts to Nashua, New Hampshire several days after that incident.

Helicopter cameras from 7News captured footage of Simone stepping out of his vehicle, getting down on his knees, and placing his hands on the ground. The video then shows two troopers punch Simone as he attempted to surrender.

Two state troopers, one from Massachusetts and one from New Hampshire, were relieved of duty as their actions are investigated. The New Hampshire Attorney General’s office said they will initiate a criminal investigation to determine if the use of force was appropriate.

Simone was already arraigned as a fugitive from justice in Nashua last Thursday.
