Bangor police capture suspect who jumped from roof — and pigeon — in photo

This photo, which was altered by Bangor police, shows a suspect who jumped from a roof and a pigeon flying overhead.
When Bangor police responded to a noise complaint, they captured more than just a man accused of squatting in an apartment. A photo of the scene also caught a pigeon in flight.
“Pigeon photography is not all that popular,” police said in a Facebook post. “Even with the advent of the handy cell phone camera, not many people are taking the challenge.”
But before police altered the photo using Microsoft Paint — or, “magic,” as the post’s author likes to call it — the image told another story.
Police responded to a report of “loud and angry” voices in a home. When an officer arrived, he spoke to an elderly man who said that a younger couple was living in his upstairs apartment without paying bills and refused his requests to vacate, police said. When the officer knocked on the apartment door, a woman answered, telling him that the other tenant, a man, had gone to the store, and that the officer did not have permission to enter the apartment, according to police.
“People that do not belong in certain places sometimes like to pretend that they do to create the illusion that they do belong there,” the post said. “[Officer] Walker knew better.”
When the officer went back to speak with the elderly homeowner to retrieve a key, he heard a “thud” that sounded like someone landing on the ground, police said. Outside, he found the man who was reportedly at the store on the ground.
“He really had been inside the apartment. Go figure,” police said in the post. “Just when we start to trust again, someone comes along and treats our faith in the words of others like the treble button on an teenager’s in-dash Kenwood stereo.”
Police said the man jumped from the peak of the roof — a move that was witnessed by construction workers on that same roof. Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene to injuries the man sustained to his ankles that were not considered serious, police said.
“There is nothing better than a paramedic when this happens,” police said. “Except, maybe stairs.”
Police added a black box to the photo to obscure the injured man’s body on the ground — and made note of the flying pigeon. They said charges are pending for the man, who had “search and testing requirements” as part of the conditions of his release from a previous run-in with police.
