An elementary school teacher from Lowell and a high schooler from Rockland are the latest lucky — and fully vaccinated — winners of the Massachusetts VaxMillions Giveaway.
State officials announced Thursday that Lilly Guttenplan, an elementary ESL teacher, is the winner of giveaway’s fourth $1 million prize this week.
A mother of two, Guttenplan and her husband plan to put the winnings towards their daughters’ college education, officials said. According to the press release, Guttenplan got vaccinated to protect herself, her family, and her community.
“Lilly is thankful to all the frontline workers and everyone who is still responding to the many challenges of COVID in different ways,” officials said.
Meanwhile, Nadia Dutton, a rising sophomore at Rockland High School, won this week’s $300,000 scholarship grant for fully vaccinated residents between the ages of 12 and 17.
A three-sport athlete on the girls volleyball, basketball and lacrosse teams, Dutton is interested in a career in nursing, following her mother’s footsteps. Officials said she would like to be a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist and is hoping to attend a four-year college in the New England area. With the scholarship grant, Dutton is “very interested” in Rhode Island’s Salve Regina University, where her mom attained her nursing degree, officials said.
According to the press release, Dutton got vaccinated after seeing the impacts of COVID on her community and to help protect others.
Gov. Charlie Baker’s administration announced the lottery-style VaxMillions sweepstakes for fully vaccinated residents in mid-June as part of their efforts to further increase the state’s vaccination rate. Currently, Massachusetts has the third-highest vaccination rate in the country, with over 75 percent of adults fully vaccinated and nearly 86 percent with at least one dose so far.
Thursday is also the last day that fully vaccinated residents can register for the fifth and final VaxMillions drawing next week. Winners will be drawn on next Monday, contacted by state officials, and announced on Thursday, August 26.
