Mass. man arrested for allegedly violating Maui’s COVID-19 quarantine order

A Massachusetts man was arrested last week in Maui after he allegedly failed to abide by the Hawaiian island’s COVID-19 travel rules.

Charles Lonchiadis, 51, was arrested Friday for allegedly violating Maui County’s travel and quarantine rules. The island requires arriving travelers to quarantine for 10 days if they don’t present a pre-travel negative COVID-19 test.

When he arrived in Maui from Los Angeles, Lonchiadis did not provide a negative pre-travel test or have accommodations for completing the 10-day quarantine, according to police. He was transported to the Wailuku Police Station without incident and volunteered to leave Maui and fly to Oahu.

Lonchiadis is one of five individuals arrested so far this month in Maui for violating the county’s COVID-19 travel rules, according to police. Four of the five volunteered to leave the island, but one 45-year-old woman from California was arrested and held on $2,000 bail.
