Dr. Abraar Karan issued a reminder to the public this week on the urgency for getting vaccinated and keeping up public health measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus

The physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital wrote on Twitter that he and his colleagues are still caring for people who are sick with COVID-19.

“Unfortunately, most that end up sick in the hospital were so close to getting vaccinated,” Karan wrote. “The worst part is the regret people feel that they just almost made it. Folks: please, do not let your guard down now, especially until you get the shot.”

The doctor emphasized that he is not seeking to place blame on anyone who is continuing to contract the illness.

“No one *wants* to get sick,” he wrote. “And most cases didn’t have the means to avoid infection.”

But Karan urged the public to avoid circumstances that place individuals at higher risk for the disease. Wear masks indoors in poorly ventilated, public, and crowded situations, he said.

And get vaccinated.

“If you want to remove your mask, do that outside & avoid crowds, “ Karan wrote. “Vaccines work. They are the best means of protection we have — do what you can to get yours.”
