Local doctors are praising President Joe Biden for his Thursday announcement directing states to make all adults eligible for COVID-19 vaccines by May 1.

The president announced the move during an evening address to the nation, sharing it was one of several steps aimed at battling the coronavirus pandemic with the goal of letting Americans gather in small groups for the Fourth of July.
Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of the Brown University School of Public Health, reacted on Twitter, reminding readers that the United States has both the vaccines and distribution capacity to meet the May 1 goal.
“We can end this pandemic,” he said. “This is our shot.”
Dr. Megan Ranney, an emergency room physician and director of the Brown Lifespan Center for Digital Health, agreed.
“Good #leadership listens… Directs resources toward problems… Checks back to see what they missed,” she wrote on Twitter. “And this, folks, is a great example of good leadership.”
Dr. Abraar Karan, a physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, wrote on Twitter that Biden’s announcements were “music” to his ears, and drew a comparison to Biden’s predecessor.
“Finally a President who actually gets it,” he wrote. “Beating the pandemic is our way out of the pandemic…not pretending like it doesn’t exist or waving to your fans from an SUV like all is fine when you’re actually hypoxic & getting monoclonal antibody infusions.”
