Almost 150 coronavirus cases have been traced back to a Fitchburg church’s programs and services, city officials say.

Events held at Crossroads Community Church on Ashby State Road around Oct. 18 are linked to the dozens of cases, many of them believed to be asymptomatic, which means those infected could have spread the contagious virus unknowingly, the Sentinel & Enterprise reports. The Board of Health reported the new cases Saturday.

Members of the church did not respond to requests for comment from the newspaper.

As of Saturday, Fitchburg had recorded 1,126 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 816 recoveries and 85 deaths since March 1, according to an update posted to Facebook by Mayor Stephen DiNatale. There were 176 active cases.

Over 40 cases are connected to local ice and dek hockey events, according to the Sentinel & Enterprise.

The Fitchburg Health Department, Fallon Ambulance Service, and state health officials are offering free testing on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the stone house at Coggshall Park on Eastern Avenue, the newspaper reports.
