Another high school graduation gets cancelled after covert camp sparks COVID-19 concerns

Weymouth High School’s graduation has been cancelled following an unauthorized football camp that the town’s public health department hadn’t approved, school officials announced Tuesday.

The graduation, set for Friday, is the second this week to be cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns. Cohasset cancelled its ceremony, also planned for Friday, after nearly 30 students, and some parents, attended a “prom-like party” on July 25.

Weymouth authorities cited concerns over the “as-of-yet undetermined” risk posed by the football camp “for a potential COVID-19 cluster,” a news release said.

“We are disappointed that we cannot celebrate our Class of 2020 as planned and we know that this will be disheartening news for our senior students and their families,” Superintendent Jennifer Curtis-Whipple said in the release.

“However, given the significant safety concerns posed by unauthorized large group events, we feel that canceling our in-person graduation is the safest course of action to protect the health of our students and the surrounding community,” she said.

Recent large gatherings have resulted in multiple cases of COVID-19. A party in Chatham infected at least 13, while eight lifeguards in Falmouth tested positive, and a party was believed to be the source.
