Rutland Police Det. John Songy dies from COVID-19

A Rutland police detective hospitalized early this month with COVID-19 has died from the disease.
John Songy, 48, died just after midnight on Friday, his wife, Joanne Songy, wrote in a Facebook post.
“It is with a broken heart that I had to say good bye to my best friend and love of my life,” she said in the post, published at 11:21 a.m. Friday. “I would like to thank each and everyone of you from the bottom of my heart for the prayers, love, and support that you have given to me and our family.”

John Songy, who lived in Leicester, had worked for the Rutland department for eight years, according to a statement from Rutland Chief Nicholas Monaco. He had worked at the Oakham Police Department previously.
“We wish to extend our sincerest condolences to Detective Songy’s family during this difficult time and we would like to thank the community for the generous outpouring of support that John, his family and the department have received throughout this ordeal,” the statement said.

John was rushed to Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester in the middle of the night on May 2, Joanne had told Boston.com in a past interview. Since then, he had received a convalescent plasma donation, a treatment thought to help combat the virus. The community rallied around him — a drive on May 12 included over 1,000 vehicles.
John’s condition continued to worsen while he was in the hospital, according to regular updates on Facebook from Joanne.
On Thursday night, Joanne said on Facebook that she had rushed to the hospital after her husband’s doctor said he “isn’t doing well.” At the time, she asked for prayers for a miracle.
