A worker at Star Market in Belmont has died of complications related to COVID-19, the company has confirmed.

“We were saddened to learn that an associate at our Star Market store in Belmont, Massachusetts, has passed away due to complications related to COVID-19,” part of a statement from the company said. “Our hearts are heavy, and our thoughts are with that associate’s family. This is a difficult day for the entire Star market team.”

This is the third supermarket worker to succumb to the virus in Massachusetts. Vitalina Williams, who worked at Market Basket in Salem, died on April 7. Leon Marin, who worked at Whole Foods in Swampscott, died last Wednesday.

The Star Market worker, who remains unidentified by the company, hadn’t worked at the store since April 4, and the store has since undergone “multiple cycles of our enhanced cleaning, sanitizing and disinfection process,” part of the statement says.

“In an abundance of caution, we conducted a thorough cleaning, sanitizing, and/or disinfecting when we received notification of the confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis,” according to the statement.

Counselors are available to speak with other store workers via the Employee Assistance Program, according to the company. Workers have all been given masks, and they’ve been reminded to wash their hands and to disinfect checkout areas.
