A truck scraped the top of the O’Neill Tunnel Thursday morning snarling traffic for hours
It took a couple of hours for all lanes to reopen on Interstate 93 southbound, according to officials.
The driver of the tractor-trailer that scraped the top of the O’Neill Tunnel on Interstate 93 southbound Thursday morning was cited for the truck being too tall and too wide, according to state police.
The driver is a 59-year-old man from Ontario, Canada, police said. When the truck hit the ceiling of the tunnel just south of Exit 20, debris scattered across the highway.

State police alerted commuters on Twitter just after 6 a.m. that the falling debris had caused two other vehicles to become disabled and two right lanes were closed. No injuries were reported.

The incident was captured on video by a state Department of Transportation camera.
At 6:22 a.m., state police said MassDOT was working on extracting the truck and its related equipment from the tunnel. Only one lane was open.

During the time that workers were removing the truck, the MBTA also stopped several bus routes at Sullivan Station due to the crash. Passengers were advised to take the Orange Line into the city.
#MBTA Bus Routes 325, 326, 352 and 354 will be stopping at Sullivan Station until further notice to allow passengers to take Orange Line service into downtown. This diversion is due to an accident on 93 southbound inside the O’Neill Tunnel.

By 7:44 a.m., two lanes were open, according to MassDOT. The tunnel was officially cleared by 8:25 a.m.
