A Medford facility tied to one of the state’s major Dunkin’ franchise operators is closing, cutting 63 jobs, according to a state filing. The site, run by Medford CPL Inc. and owned by the Couto Management Group, will shut its doors by March 17.
Couto Management Group started in 1986 with its first Dunkin’ shop in Allston, according to the company’s website. Today, it runs numerous locations across Massachusetts, from the North Shore to Cape Cod.
According to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification sent to the state on Friday, 13 employees are truck drivers represented by Teamsters Local 25. The 50 employees who work in the plant are not in a union.
Medford assessor’s records say the food processing facility at 93 Mystic Ave. is over 14,000 square feet.
The business entity 93 Mystic Ave LLC bought the property in 2002 for slightly over $2 million. The LLC lists the founder of Couto Management as a manager. The city last assessed the property at $3.5 million.
Neither Dunkin’ headquarters nor Couto Management Group returned a request for additional information. Teamsters Local 25 also did not return a request for comment.
The closure announcement follows the opening of a massive new doughnut plant in Haverhill last year by a different operator. That facility replaced a smaller production site in North Reading, which laid off 74 workers in September.
The Haverhill plant, which produces about a million pastries a day, is now expanding — and even made headlines in December after neighbors complained about the overpowering doughnut aroma.
