GameStop to scale back nationwide, closing roughly 12 stores in Mass.

The closures come as the chain navigates financial turmoil long after its 2021 meme-stock fame.

GameStop is reportedly closing hundreds of stores nationwide, including at least a dozen in Massachusetts, as the embattled retailer undergoes another wave of cutbacks.

While the Texas-based company did not confirm the closures on Wednesday, crowdsourced online lists indicate that more than 200 locations have already closed. Boston.com verified 12 closures in Massachusetts, with additional shutdowns reported in New Hampshire and Connecticut.

GameStop said in a December report that it closed 590 stores in the U.S. last year — and it expected to close many more through fiscal 2025, which ends in February 2026.

In its February 2025 annual report, the company reported 2,325 stores nationwide, including 36 in Massachusetts.

The company also reported lower third-quarter revenue, down 4.6% to $821 million, amid a surge in collectible sales, including Funko POP! and action figures.

GameStop has been gradually reducing its global footprint, closing operations in Austria, Ireland, Switzerland, and Germany, and with plans to sell its operations in Canada and France.

GameStop reported having more than 3,200 stores worldwide in February, down from a peak of more than 6,000 in the mid-2010s.

According to the The Dallas Morning News, GameStop even closed its Grapevine, Texas, store, which is home to its corporate headquarters.

GameStop’s stock has fallen sharply from its 2021 “meme stock” peak — a surge primarily driven by Brockton native Keith Gill.

During mid-day trading on Wednesday, the company’s shares were at $21.49, down from a high of $81.25 in January 2021.
