Piedmont Airlines, a subsidiary of American Airlines Group, will cut 61 jobs at Boston Logan International Airport in November as it ends its ground handling services there.

In a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act notice to the state on Sept. 19, Piedmont Airlines announced that it would commence furloughs on Nov. 18.

Piedmont operates nearly 400 daily departures from Charlotte, Philadelphia, and Chicago to more than 55 cities throughout the eastern United States. Its headquarters are in Salisbury, Maryland, and it employs more than 11,000 aviation professionals.

Boston’s furloughs affect management, customer service supervisors, customer service agents, and administrative employees.

On Sept. 19, the company notified the impacted employees and their Communications Workers of America union. The company remains in communication with the workers’ union.

The airline expects the furlough to be permanent, but will keep employees on furlough status for four years.

CLOSURES AND LAYOFFS:

The company said agents have limited bumping rights into other locations. Bumping rights let laid-off workers replace the jobs of less senior employees within the same company.

Still, the company is actively soliciting transfer requests and is working with affected employees to provide resources, guidance, and opportunities within the company where possible.

Despite the layoffs, Piedmont, in a statement, says it will continue supporting select American Eagle regional flights at the airport and “remains committed to serving the airport community.”

“We are proud of the service our team has delivered over the past couple of years and deeply value their contributions to our operation,” Piedmont Airlines said in a statement.
