The Paper Store has closed its West Roxbury location

However, the family-run company is continuing to grow and modernize stores throughout the state.

The West Roxbury location of The Paper Store closed on Wednesday, leaving a hole in the Roche Bros. plaza.

According to the company, The Paper Store was not able to come to an agreement with the landlord to continue the lease at this location.

“We are always evaluating our stores based on the lease with the landlord, plaza and store traffic, and proximity to other Paper Stores in the area — among other factors,” Tom Anderson, president and CEO of the company, said in a statement.

The company does not have any plans to open a new store in this location as they have other nearby stores in Dedham at 320 Legacy Place and in Quincy at 51 Newport Ave.

The Anderson family started the company as a small newspaper stand in Maynard in 1964, and they still run it today. It has since evolved into a family-owned specialty retailer, selling stationery, jewelry, clothing, and more.

The Paper Store celebrated its 60th anniversary last year by announcing a $60 million expansion plan to modernize locations across the Northeast over the next five years.

In 2024, the company opened or refreshed nine stores across its portfolio, and this year they have already opened or refreshed seven stores with plans for an additional seven later this year.

The openings include moving the Hudson store to a new plaza and larger location while staying in the community. A new flagship location is opening in Attleboro in mid-August; it will be one of the largest stores in the company’s portfolio.

According to a 2024 release, The Paper Store has over 100 stores nationwide and over 3,000 employees.

“Our expansion plans over the next several years represent our commitment to reinvesting in our community with the same dedication and passion that has defined our family-run business for decades,” Anderson said.
