The REI Co-op store in Cambridge is closing.
After four years at the Morgan Avenue location, REI Co-op announced the store will close permanently on Thursday, April 3, at 6 p.m.
In June 2021, REI announced the opening of the store, its “first-ever small-format neighborhood store.” The 4,000-square-foot store is part of the Cambridge Crossing community, which includes residential and commercial buildings.
The initial announcement said the store’s product selection was curated to serve the Cambridge community, focusing on activities like running and cycling.
“As the smallest footprint store in our fleet in the country … we opened with a learning agenda to understand how to best serve the needs of an urban community,” REI said in a statement sent to Boston.com at the time.
However, REI is closing the location in early April “due to underperformance against the co-op’s goals.”
Signs of the closing announcement are displayed at the store.
REI says it is not closing any other stores in the region. With stores in Boston, Framingham, Hingham, and Reading, the company also has no plans to open additional regional locations.
“We apologize for the future inconvenience to our members and the outdoor community,” REI said.
The last day to place an online pickup at the store is March 19, and the last day to drop off bikes, skis, and snowboards for service is Wednesday, March 26.
On Reddit, one user in response to the closure said, “what a bummer.”
Others said they enjoyed the bike shop and now must find an alternative.
Another said, “this is really disappointing” but noted that the store never seemed busy.
REI is an outdoor retailer headquartered near Seattle and the nation’s largest consumer co-op.
