Joann, a national retailer of fabric and craft supplies, announced it would immediately begin going-out-of-business sales at all 800 of its stores nationwide, including the 21 in Massachusetts.

Formerly known as Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts, the craft giant said earlier this month that it would close 500 locations, which included 20 of the Massachusetts stores. After its second bankruptcy filing in last than a year, the company said Sunday that it had been sold to the GA Group and its prepetition term loan agent.

As the winning bidder, GA Group and the lender will acquire substantially all of Joann’s assets.

“Joann leadership, our Board, advisors and legal partners made every possible effort to pursue a more favorable outcome that would keep the company in business,” said a spokesperson for Joann.

It said it was “committed to working constructively” with GA Group to wind down operations.

“We deeply appreciate our dedicated team members, our customers and communities across the nation for their unwavering support for more than 80 years,” the spokesperson said.

It joins other big-box retailers that have announced they will close certain Massachusetts stores already this year, including Kohl’s, Macy’s, and Nordstrom. Like Joann, Party City announced its bankruptcy in December and said it would be entirely winding down its retail and wholesale operations.

Joann has locations in Billerica, Burlington, Dartmouth, Hadley, Hanover, Holyoke, Hyannis, Leominster, Ludlow, Methuen, Middleton, Milford, Natick, North Attleborough, Pittsfield, Raynham, Saugus, Seekonk, Shrewsbury, Walpole, and Westford. Stores don’t have set closing dates, but Joann said they will close stores once the sales are complete, a process that the company expects to take “a number of weeks.” Customers can use gift cards until Feb. 28. Personalized discounts, including for teachers, military, healthcare workers, and Girl Scouts, have been paused. Returns will not be accepted.
