Market Basket looking to take over Mass. movie theater space

The Tewksbury-based grocery chain may be making its way to Seekonk.

Market Basket has a plan in the works to open a grocery store in the space of a Seekonk movie theater.

DeMoulas Super Markets Inc., Market Basket’s parent company, informed the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act Office (MEPA) that it plans to redevelop a 16-acre site at 100 Commerce Way in Seekonk, according to a WCVB report.

Property records show that the company bought the property for $9.5 million from NAI Entertainment Holdings in July.

The plan includes redeveloping three new buildings, the largest of which is the current location of Showcase Cinemas. The use for the other two smaller buildings hasn’t been determined, according to the report.

In its filing to MEPA, DeMoulas noted the minimal impact the project will have on the local environment and pointed to the high level of economic activity in the area.

“No offsite alternatives were considered as the redevelopment of this site as this premier location provides the best reuse of the property while minimizing the impacts to the environment commonly associated with the development of previously unaltered land,” the company wrote in the document. “Moreover, Seekonk has identified this site as being within the area of the largest focal point of economic activity in the community and is widely recognized as an indispensable resource for the Town’s tax base.”
