Citizens Bank is closing 15 branches nationwide, including four in Massachusetts, as part of its plan to transform how its customers bank.
Citizens Bank said in a statement on Wednesday that it is continually reviewing customer patterns to evolve and adjust branch strategy across its network.
The bank will “remain committed” to its branch network and has plans to add standalone branches over the next several years while continuing to invest in its digital and mobile capabilities, the company said.
The bank closures will happen in January 2025.
Three of the four closures in Massachusetts are within grocery store locations, two at Stop & Shop in Bellingham and Hyde Park and one at Star Market in Belmont. The only standalone bank branch closing in Massachusetts is in Burlington.
The Hyde Park and Bellingham locations will get the Citizens Virtual Assistant Experience, an interactive teller machine kiosk. The new system will combine a self-service approach with virtual human assistance.
The new interactive teller machines will allow customers to transact using the ATM or by connecting virtually with a live assistant, who can help with more complex transactions like large cash withdrawals, payments, account maintenance, and advice.
Citizens Bank, headquartered in Providence, Rhode Island, had assets of $219.7 billion as of Sept. 30. The bank has about 3,100 ATMs and over 1,000 branches in 14 states and the District of Columbia.
