The first of eight Stop & Shop locations will close in Massachusetts on Thursday as part of the company’s restructuring plans.
A company spokesperson confirmed the store, located at 165 Needham St. in Newton, is closing. All other stores slated to close in the state will remain open through September and October.
The closure is part of the company’s broader plan, announced in July, to reposition itself by closing 32 underperforming stores.
The Newton location was one of eight stores listed to close by Nov. 2.
The move follows an announcement in May in which Ahold Delhaize, the corporate parent of the Quincy-based company, said it was focusing on improving the chain’s performance, lowering customer prices, and remodeling stores.
Stop & Shop said it will offer positions to all impacted workers at other places within the company.
Since 2018, the company has completed over 190 store remodels, including the new, 52,000-square-foot Boston flagship location, which opened last month in Allston Yards.
After the closures, Stop & Shop will operate more than 350 stores in five states, including 81 in Connecticut, 115 in Massachusetts, 47 in New Jersey, 91 in New York, and 25 in Rhode Island.
Here is the list of closing locations:
