After legal threat, J.P. Licks changes name of ‘Chipwich’ to ‘Lixwich’

Vincent Petryk is used to getting cease-and-desist letters from big-name brands crying foul over trademark infringement. You might say he’s made it an art.

There was the flap with Ben & Jerry’s more than a decade ago, when Petryk, owner of J.P. Licks, created “Cherry Garciaparra,” a fruit-flavored ice cream, speckled with chocolate chips, that was named after then-Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra. Ben & Jerry’s said Petryk’s flavor was a little too similar to its “Cherry Garcia.”

Then there was the run-in he had with the makers of Kahlúa, who demanded Petryk either fork over cash, or stop using its moniker to sell one of his popular ice cream flavors.
