Finding parking on Newbury Street won’t be the usual headache on August 7. That’s because parking on the street won’t even be possible.

The city plans to bar vehicle traffic from the shopping thoroughfare from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the first Sunday of August to experiment with what it calls the pedestrian-only “Open Newbury Street.”

“Open Newbury Street is an opportunity for our residents and visitors to enjoy everything Newbury Street has to offer without worrying about cars,” Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said in a statement. “We’ve received a large amount of positive feedback from the community, and have worked closely with businesses and residents to ensure the pedestrian-only street closure will positively impact the neighborhood’s residents and businesses.”

Newbury will be closed to vehicles from Berkeley Street to Massachusetts Avenue, according to the statement.

Walsh’s administration had previously said it would close the street to vehicles for a day in the summer, but had not named a date. In May, Jerome Smith, Walsh’s civic engagement chief, said depending on how things go, the car shutdown could happen again.

“We want to do it once, and see how it works,” he told The Boston Globe at the time. “Maybe we can get to a point where we do it once a month, if the businesses were comfortable.”
