Boston Beer Company files to trademark ‘Brexit’ as a hard cider
Samuel Adams and the Sons of Liberty led their own Brexit in 1776, and now Samuel Adams the beer wants to keep that tradition alive.
The Boston Beer Company, the makers of Sam Adams beers and Angry Orchard ciders, filed an application to trademark the term “Brexit” as the name of a hard cider last Friday, The Wall Street Journal reported.
“Brexit,” short for British exit, refers to Great Britain’s vote last week to leave the European Union.
Jessica Paar, director of communications for Boston Beer, confirmed the “Brexit” trademark application in an email.
“We are not sure exactly how we would use the name yet, but it would likely be for a small batch of cider out of our Angry Orchard research and development orchard in Walden, NY,” she said. “We have a long history of working alongside cidermakers from Britain and source some of our apples from the UK.”
Here’s a drawing of the proposed trademark submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
