New Balance’s 3D-printed shoes are coming to Boston next year
Boston-based New Balance will start selling running shoes with 3D-printed midsoles next April, according to BetaBoston.
The shoes, the first with 3D-printed componets to be mass produced, will be sold at select Boston stores to start, according to the report. New Balance partnered with 3D Systems Inc., of Rock Hill, South Carolina, to develop a new powder that’s melded into a solid with a laser to create the midsole, which will be manufactured at New Balance’s plant in Lawrence.
For now, the shoes will not be unique. But that option may be rolled out in a “trial way’’ in 2017, Katherine Petrecca, New Balance’s general manager of studio innovation, told BetaBoston.
