The MBTA, as you may have heard, is not on particularly solid financial footing. But here’s a little bit of a bright spot: The T says September will be its best-ever month in terms of advertising revenue.

The agency will bring in $3.16 million in ad sales this month, according to spokesman Joe Pesaturo. Prior to this month, the agency’s previous best month came last October, when it sold $2.66 million in advertising, he said.

Pesaturo said the T has already driven more ad revenue in 2015 than it did in all of 2014, $25.4 million to $21.7 million. He said 2015 will be the top advertising year in T history. Those figures are based on the calendar year, rather than the T’s fiscal year.

As the T looks to move toward a balanced budget in the coming years, its leaders have emphasized cutting costs and finding ways to boost its existing revenue sources. Advertising revenue has been one oft-cited area to try and boost performance.

The top five MBTA advertisers in September were: Capital One; fantasy sports company DraftKings, which is based in Boston and is advertising seemingly everywhere; Verizon; Irish clothing retailer Primark, which opened a Boston store Thursday; and Coca-Cola.
