MBTA flipping the switch on underground Green Line countdown clock

Underground countdown clocks are coming to the Green Line. The Boston Globe

Starting today, the wait for the Green Line after a Red Sox game will be a little less vexing.

The MBTA is activating a countdown sign at the Kenmore station this morning, letting riders know how long before their trolley will arrive.

It’s the first underground timer on the Green Line after above-ground signs were installed earlier this year on the D branch. The Red, Orange, and Blue lines have all been fully outfitted with countdown signs since early 2014, after the T began rolling the digital hourglasses out in 2012.

The rest of the underground Green Line stations will be outfitted with the countdown signs in the coming months, starting with a trip one stop down the tunnel from Kenmore: the Hynes station will see its clocks turned on next week, according to the MBTA.

The installation of Green Line tracking technology was funded by a $13.4 million grant issued by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation in 2012, according to MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo.
