Apple thought about a second Boston store

Would Apple ever open a second retail store inside Boston’s boundaries? According to four people familiar with the discussions, it talked with the developers of Seaport Square about opening a store on the South Boston waterfront.

But according to the sources, the discussions were not very advanced, no deal is close, and it’s unlikely the idea is even still alive at the 23-acre mixed-use development. One real estate source said the plan is on hold while another said plainly that it’s no longer in the works.

Apple has also considered other Boston locations, according to two of the sources. But the company may opt not to open a second Boston store at all, they said.

While Apple has one store in Boston proper—a 26,000-square-foot Back Bay centerpiece on Boylston Street, which opened in 2008—it has the rest of the metro market fairly well covered. It has smaller stores nearby, at CambridgeSide Galleria in Cambridge, Chestnut Hill Mall in Chestnut Hill, South Shore Plaza in Braintree, and Legacy Place in Dedham.

Apple declined to comment. So did W-S Development, which is in charge of the retail side of Seaport Square.

Seaport Square announced its first three retailers last fall. The site will feature a movie theater, a fitness club, and a bowling alley.
