Developer drops out of casino sweepstakes

The competition for the state’s final casino license looks like it’s down to two proposals—one in New Bedford and one in Brockton—after a prospective developer in Somerset withdrew its application to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.

The Brockton casino would be located on the Brockton Fairgrounds and built by a subsidiary of midwest casino company Rush Street Gaming. New Bedford’s would be built along the water by New York-based developer KG Urban, and operated by Foxwoods. Cost estimates for both southeastern Massachusetts proposals clock in at $650 million.

The Somerset proposal had lagged behind its two competitors, and its developer, Crossroads Massachusetts, asked earlier this month for an extension to find financial backing. But on May 11, Crossroads submitted a letter to the gaming commission saying it was calling it quits. The withdrawal of the application was discussed at Thursday’s gaming commission meeting.

New Bedford has not fully completed its application, but the commission on Thursday voted that it was close enough to move forward.

Brockton cleared a hurdle earlier this week—by maybe an inch—when city voters narrowly approved of bringing a casino to the city. New Bedford votes next month.

A decision on who, if anybody, will get the state’s last remaining license is expected later this year.
