President Obama In 3D

Printers aren’t just for pressing ink on paper anymore.

Over the past few years, 3-D printers have developed the capabilities to design objects, cook edible food, and soon, grow organs.

This week, President Barack Obama became the first president to have his portrait created with a 3-D printer.

“A once-shuttered warehouse is now a state-of-the art lab where new workers are mastering the 3-D printing that has the potential to revolutionize the way we make almost everything,’’ he said back in his State of the Union address last year.

To make the portrait, the president sat in front of about 50 lights and a group of cameras that captured his measurements. From there, the printer built the life-size replica layer by layer, from the bottom up.

The portrait is now on display at the Smithsonian Castle.
