One Seaport Square Will Have a Gym, a Movie Theater, and a Bowling Alley
Three retail tenants for One Seaport Square were announced Friday at a groundbreaking ceremony for the 1.5 million-square-foot South Boston residential and commercial development.
A 10-auditorium movie theater from Chicago-based Kerasotes Showplace Theatres, a luxury gym from New York-based Equinox, and a bowling alley from Boston-based Kings Bowl will serve as “powerful anchors’’ for the space, said Dick Marks, a partner at WS Development, which is overseeing the retail development at One Seaport Square. The movie theater will include a restaurant, seating 175 people. Upon completion, expected for 2017, the $600 million project will include 250,000 square feet of retail space, with more tenants to be announced as the project moves forward. Other large-scale WS Development projects in Massachusetts include MarketStreet in Lynnfield and Legacy Place in Dedham, both of which also host Kings locations.
The project, located between Seaport Boulevard and Northern Avenue, will feature two residential towers totaling 832 units from Berkshire Group. (Boston Global Investors is the third company partnered on the project.) The Benjamin and VIA, as they’re being called, are meant “for urban residents who desire close proximity to their jobs,’’ said Heather Boujoulian, a Berkshire Group VP who is serving as the project executive. The VIA will feature more apartments, with 96 of them considered “innovation units’’—they will be “cost-effective studio and one-bedroom apartments with creative design configurations,’’ the developers say. (In other words, they’ll be small.)
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, who would later ascend and operate a power shovel as part of a ceremonial groundbreaking, said Friday that the project will “help us achieve our ambitious housing goals,’’ referring to his administration’s plan to build 53,000 new housing units in Boston by 2030. Gov.-elect Charlie Baker was also on hand for a while, but left before the ceremony got off to a delayed start.
