Remember That Flight You Never Bought? This Waltham Company Remembers, Too

A Waltham-based company that helps students save money on traveling costs said it accidentally sent emails to many of its customers — and possibly others — incorrectly advising them their credit cards would be charged for numerous airline tickets.

StudentUniverse’s Twitter timeline was full of apologies to customers Wednesday night, blaming the error on both a “technical glitch’’ and “internal human error.’’

“If you received such an email, please disregard its contents and note that you have not been charged anything and that no personal information has been leaked,’’ a post on their corporate blog read. “The email is unrelated to actual transaction data.’’

The company’s phone number was busy and its website down Wednesday evening, though everything was back to normal Thursday.

Some on Twitter seemed surprised that the company had their email addresses at all, claiming they had never used the service:

“Over the years, we have partnered with numerous reputable companies to provide giveaways, offers and more,’’ spokesperson Danielle Milerick told Boston.com “We have confirmed that every recipient of the email has been associated with StudentUniverse either directly or through a trusted partner. The recent email may have included some inactive contacts, whom would not regularly receive communications from StudentUniverse. We have corrected this issue and recipients will no longer receive similar emails from StudentUniverse.’’

Milerick did not respond to a follow-up question asking how many people received the false notices.
