DirecTV and the NFL have reached a new deal for DirecTV to carry its Sunday Ticket package, which gives subscribers access to every Sunday afternoon NFL game.

According to ESPN sports business reporter Darren Rovell, the deal will net the NFL $1.5 billion per year for eight years, a solid half billion more per annum than the two sides’ previous agreement. DirecTV doesn’t seem overly worried that the NFL is in long-term danger as a result of controversies in recent years.

Earlier this year, DirecTV reached a deal to merge with AT&T. A clause in the agreement, which is still pending, said AT&T could back out if DirecTV didn’t reach a renewed Sunday Ticket deal. That was probably never a serious concern, but now it can be brushed off entirely.
