Market Basket Protesters: Arthur T. Reinstatement Remains ‘Non-Negotiable’
Market Basket protesters issued a statement to Boston.com Saturday morning, making it clear they intend to continue their actions moving forward.
“(Market Basket) associates and customers remain fully committed to our cause. (Arthur T. Demoulas) must be reinstated with full authority to CEO of (Demoulas Super Markets). This has been, and will continue to be, non-negotiable.’’
The statement was posted on the Save Market Basket Facebook page shortly after it was released to Boston.com.
Protesters later added to the statement on Facebook, saying they would “work for no other CEO’’ in the event of a sale of the company.
In two separate statements Friday, albeit with very different tones, Market Basket’s board and co-CEOs Felicia Thornton and James Gooch urged employees to return to work, as the day brought no clear resolution to the ongoing situation. However, protests—which include rallies at stores, the refusal of deliveries, and customer boycotts—are likely to continue, especially in light on the new statement.
Arthur T. Demoulas has offered to buy out rival shareholders for control of the company. On Friday, the company’s board acknowledged it had received the offer and said it would consider it.
