Stoneham woman received racist letter after putting up Black Lives Matter signs, police say
“I was appalled by the contents of this letter, and want to make clear that this type of behavior is uncalled for and has no place in our community,” said Stoneham's police chief.
A Stoneham woman received an anonymous, slur-ridden letter following her decision to put up Black Lives Matter signs in her neighborhood, the Stoneham police department said in a statement Friday.
“Last evening, we were made aware of an anonymous letter a local resident received, ridiculing her for placing Black Lives Matter and similar signs in her yard,” Stoneham Police Chief McIntyre said. “I was appalled by the contents of this letter, and want to make clear that this type of behavior is uncalled for and has no place in our community.”
The woman, whom WCVB identified as Dr. Erin Tracy Bradley, told the station, “Our town is better than this, our community is better than this, but unfortunately racism is still very real and sometimes painful.”
The letter, which has been reshared online, contains racist slurs. An excerpt of the letter addressed “Dear Erin” reads, “Your Black lives Lawn Signs do nothing but lower the value of your neighbor’s property. So instead of worrying about the Black Community in other towns, maybe you should be concerned with your neighbor’s lives instead of embarrassing yourself & family in front of a good community…”
