While Kendall Square mainstay Cambridge Brewing Company poured its last pint Friday, the brand’s beers will live on through a deal with another local favorite, Castle Island Brewing Co.
Castle Island has acquired the Cambridge Brewing Company brand, announcing plans last week to keep CBC beers on tap at bars and restaurants in the area, plus Castle Island’s Norwood and South Boston taprooms.
“Our mission is to preserve everything fans love about CBC while slowly growing its reach,” Castle Island said in a Dec. 18 announcement on Facebook. “Eventually, our hope is to get cans back on shelves throughout Greater Boston.”
The two brewers began working together earlier this year to help meet demand for CBC’s Amber Ale and Flower Child IPA. When CBC founder Phil Bannatyne decided to retire after more than three decades in business, he reached out to Castle Island in hopes of keeping his company’s legacy alive.
In a post of its own, Cambridge Brewing explained that Bannatyne and brewmaster Will Meyers “have a lot of respect for CIBC and feel the values and visions of our two companies align well.”
Castle Island likewise had nothing but praise for Cambridge Brewing.
“It goes without saying, we couldn’t be more honored to carry the torch,” the company said in its statement, adding, “We hope you’ll join us in toasting them as we celebrate a truly incredible run for one of the most storied breweries in Massachusetts.”
