Barrel House Z’s taproom is now open
You can now drink a beer at Weymouth’s first brewery instead of only purchasing it to go.
Barrel House Z officially opened its taproom Wednesday, and it’s now serving full pours and samples of its small batch, barrel-aged beers to thirsty customers Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7p.m. The taproom, located at 95 Woodrock Road, will serve up to 12 beers, aged in a variety of barrels, as part of its “Pilot Pours” series.
Today’s the day! Tap room is open. And it’s Chaz’s birthday. Doesn’t get much better, so come on by! #Weymouth

Though the brewery has only been open less than a year, some of its brews already have a devoted following. Sunny & 79º is a ginned pilsner co-brewed with Harpoon’s Doug MacNair, with its initial release tequila-barrel kissed. Jane Rae’s, an amber ale aged in rum barrels, and RR#23, a red ale aged in Bully Boy barrels, are also best sellers for the brewery.
“We’re focused on innovative, high-quality craft beers,” Barrel House Z founder and head brewer Russ Heissner said in a statement. “Our sweet spot is the intersection of creativity [and] science. And there’s an endless number of ideas to explore.”
Heissner began brewing in the mid-1980s as a graduate of the UC Davis Fermentation Sciences program. He took a job as a brewer for Mass Bay Brewing, now known by the name of the first beer Heissner brewed: Harpoon Ale.
Similar to Heissner’s Harpoon roots, beer won’t be the only thing being served in the taproom. The brewery will also be serving up BBQ chicken, buffalo cauliflower, truffled shrimp, and massive mac-and-cheese filled empanandas.
If you can’t hit the brewery, don’t worry. Barrel House Z is on draft at select restaurants in and around Boston, and the brewery plans to package and distribute select beers for retail this October.
