Charlie the German Shorthaired Pointer swam out too far, so police paddled out to help him

Spoiler alert: This story has a happy ending.

Scituate Police Department

Police came to the rescue last week after a Norwell dog found himself out of steam and paddling in the middle of a river channel.

Charlie, a German Shorthaired Pointer, was adopted three years ago and loves to swim, according to a Facebook post from the Scituate Police Department. But Charlie seems to have overestimated his stamina that day.

He swam into the channel of the Herring River and couldn’t get back, the post said. His owner called police from Driftway Park when they noticed the current was tiring the pup out.

An animal control officer from SPD beat the marine unit and the harbormaster to the scene. Officer Craig Keefe and a detective borrowed a paddle board and made their way toward Charlie.

“After several attempts they were able to pull Charlie out of the water and bring him back to shore to a very grateful owner,” the post said.

Facebook commenters praised the quick work of the officers and suggested Charlie’s owner invest in a doggy lifejacket.
