German Shepherd that died in Methuen mauled, not shot to death, as first thought
A necropsy was performed on Moose after he was found dead last Thursday.
A German Shepherd killed in Methuen last week was mauled to death by another dog, or multiple other dogs, not fatally shot as police initially believed, officials said in a Monday update.A necropsy was performed on Moose, who was 3 years old when he died last Thursday, and veterinarian Martha Smith-Blackmore of Forensic Veterinary Investigations LLC determined the official cause.“Dr. Smith-Blackmore noted in her report to the Methuen Police Department that it is not unusual for fatal dog-on-dog maulings to be mistaken for a gunshot injury,” police said.Moose was found dead in his backyard when one of the residents returned home and found another one of the family’s dogs lying on top of him.The criminal investigation is closed, according to police, and the family, who has other dogs, has been made aware of the report.“Police will offer resources and advice to the family on next steps,” officials said.
